What is this holiday you speak of? You say I get toys. Can I have toys now?

Gizmo finally started using his puppy pool! A few weeks ago he wouldn’t go anywhere near it, but we kept it out anyway and, about a week after our camping trip (where we kept trying to entice him into the lake using beef jerky) he finally started going in on his own! We honestly were starting to think this day would never come.

Their bulging eyes look so interesting up close, even when they’re closed…
Update on Gizmo post-neuter:The tramadol that was given to him for pain, which would normally sedate most dogs, actually made him a lot more hyper. Bolting-out-the-door hyper. After talking to the vet(s), at first they said to take him off it completely (which I was extremely hesitant to do), but then they said to reduce to dose to 1/4 pill only twice a day. I asked how I would know if he was in pain, and they said males rarely experience much pain at all with neutering (and they heal fairly quick), but if he’s in pain, I would notice heavy breathing. I asked about the whimpering/inability to calm down post surgery the day he came home, and the vet said that’s actually a side affect of coming off anesthesia, not pain. However, some of the behavior where he was avoiding sitting or laying down for more than a few minutes may be due to minor discomfort, since he did have surgery.
That’s all gone now, and since I’ve cut back on the pain medication (because I still want to give it to him in case he’s in pain. How am I really going to know if he’s in pain?), so has the craziness. Now he’s just back to his normal boston terrier craziness :).

Gizmo’s paws.
Today, he was neutered. I was ready to take a picture of him with his cone of shame, except… turns out he doesn’t need one. No interest in checking out what went missing. Mostly he acted normal, but an hour after we got home he started getting a bit agitated and whiny. I gave him his pain med but it didn’t seem to do much.I’m holding him now. He finally whimpered himself to sleep. I imagine he’s a bit sore, since he also had two teeth pulled (stuck baby teeth) and was microchipped.

During our camping trip (previous post) I got some cute macro pics of Gizmo while he was sleeping. This one (his smushieface) is currently the background on my phone. So cute.

We spent the last week camping with Gizmo. It was his first camping trip, and although a week seems long for a first time, we were within 2hrs driving distance to home in the event of any problems. He loved it. He lounged on the lounge chairs most of the time, went on short walks around the campsite, played with some of the other camping dogs, and as a treat, we let him sleep with us in the tent. At home he sleeps in a crate, and although we brought the crate with us, it was only to be used as a last resort. (Now that we’re back home, he’s back to sleeping in his crate).

It’s been a hectic few days/weeks, hence the lack of posts, but don’t fear! Gizmo has not ceased to exist :) Last Sunday we went on a 6 mile hike with my friend and her husband who were visiting from Boston. The picture was taken toward the end of the hike. He’s quite a hiker-dog though! He loves it! He was jumping over logs and fallen branches, hopping over rocks, climbing up boulders, trudging through little streams cutting through the trail (though that last part took some convincing. Still not a water dog). He survived the whole hike. Anyone think Gizmo will be climbing Mt. Everest by summer next year?
In the doggie-age-milestone area, he’s lifting his leg more consistently now when peeing. Still a little off on his balance, but he’s figuring it out :)

I love how he looks like he’s smoking a cigar.
BTW… he now looks forward to going on walks. No more dragging him down the driveway! Lets hope we don’t go through the walking-refusal-phase ever again.

Gizmo at the dog park with the biggest water bowl ever. This is the first time we went into the big dog section, but since the boston meetup was on that side (and not the small dog side for whatever reason??) we got to try it out.
